Why Are There No Casinos in Denver, Colorado?
Denver does not have traditional casinos because the Colorado Constitution restricts commercial casino gambling to the historic districts of Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. Voters approved limited gaming in those three former mining towns in 1990 to encourage tourism, preserve historic buildings, and support local economic development.
As a result, Colorado cannot simply issue a casino license for a property inside city limits. Expanding casino gambling into the city would require a change to the state constitution and approval from Colorado voters. Depending on the proposal, local voter approval could also be required.
The restrictions apply to casino-style games such as slots, blackjack, poker, craps and roulette. Tribal casinos are permitted separately on the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute reservation lands in southwestern Colorado, but there are no federally recognized tribal casino lands in the area.
Residents can still use legal sports-betting apps because mobile sports wagering is regulated separately from land-based casino gambling. However, anyone looking for a traditional casino floor must travel outside the city. The closest options are generally in Black Hawk and Central City, approximately 35 to 40 miles west of downtown Denver.
Are There Any Online Casinos in Colorado?
